A cosmopolitan Baltic capita
In recent years Latvia’s capital city has gained a reputation as a party destination, largely thanks to its excellent choice of bars, pubs and clubs. But a lively nightlife is not the only thing the city offers. There are many other attractions well worth seeing even if you are the sort of person who prefers an early night. This small, green and artistic city on the Baltic coast is famous for its well-kept parks and gardens, hidden beaches and impressive Art Nouveau buildings. And if admiring magnificent façades is not enough, you can always visit the Riga Art Noveau Centre, where you can also discover the interiors of buildings and learn about everyday life in the period.
Your exploration of the city should begin in the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander through the Old Town with its many hidden streets, attractive buildings, enchanting restaurants, shops and churches and discover architectural jewels of the Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque periods. For a wonderful panoramic view of the city, climb the 72-metre tower of St Peter’s Church. It is worth allowing yourself enough time to take in all the architectural treasures of the Old Town, enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants and visit the little souvenir shops on Skārņu iela.

For the most authentic shopping experience, visit the central market, one of the largest in Europe. The colourful selection of local seasonal produce – from fish, cheeses and smoked meats to fresh fruit and vegetables – is a feast for all the senses. For those thirsty for art and culture, Riga has a range of options suitable for every taste, interest and age group. Visit the National Museum to view the permanent collection or one of the temporary themed exhibitions. Car and motorcycle enthusiasts should not miss the Riga Motor Museum, which contains the largest and most diverse collection of motor vehicles in the Baltic countries.
