Helsinki
Helsinki captivates visitors with its beautiful landscape, diverse architecture, world-famous design and cuisine. The capital of Finland feels like a global metropolis and a small town, which is easy to explore on foot. The surrounding area, however, is best explored by boat as the city is surrounded by the sea on three sides. Helsinki is a veritable paradise for lovers of metal music and, of course, the health-beneficial Finnish saunas. The best time to visit is during the summer, when the city life moves to the many outdoor bars and cafés.

Helsinki is the largest Finnish city, but its rhythm remains relaxed. It can be navigated with ease thanks to the excellent public transport system, with walking or cycling also viable alternatives. Helsinki is regularly ranked among the world’s most liveable cities. It is famous for its unique atmosphere, stunning architecture, sophisticated design and rich artistic and cultural scene. But the Finnish capital is also surrounded by beautiful nature, which offers many opportunities to spend free time on the water and beaches, in parks and forests, and, during winter time, on snow and frozen sea. Want more? Consider that the Helsinki archipelago contains more than 300 charming islands.
Architecture lovers will not be disappointed. A walk around the city will reveal contemporary masterpieces such as the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art and the Musiikkitalo Concert Hall, but you should neither miss the Temppeliaukio Church, carved into rock, the magnificent train station and the Finlandia Talo Concert Hall. These are just a few of its gemstones, but Helsinki offers many more. In addition to architecture, mainland Europe’s northernmost capital also boasts a lively design scene. Dotted throughout the city are shops, boutiques and galleries with glassware, textiles, lights and home accessories. Good design in Helsinki is no coincidence, as you can easily see by visiting its superb design museum.

Helsinki hosts various art and cultural festivals, and is home to vibrant nightlife and various venues. If you visit Helsinki in August, don’t miss the Night of the Arts festival, which takes place all over the city. Just after the winter solstice, the Lux Helsinki festival begins, with fires being lit to fight the dark winter days. A visit to Helsinki must also include at least one visit to a Finnish sauna. Sauna relieves stress, has many health benefits and it is also a great place to get to know the Finnish sauna culture, with people sweating next to each other. Other unique experiences include tasting local Finnish specialties made of reindeer, moose, salmon, forest mushrooms and various berries in one of the city’s many restaurants.
